Handling is not a game. Play with your dog frequently, but not during handling sessions. If your dog learns that mouthing and wriggling mean that he gets his own way and the session finishes, he will use this in other situations. You will have to handle him every day throughout his life. Isn’t it easier to invest the time now to teach him how to behave properly? It is not a good idea to give your dog an old towel or brush to play with or chew on. How will he know the difference between grooming and playtime?
Teaching your dog to accept being handled is essential. There are many techniques that can be used and the following is a small sample.
Each day you should check your dog over for lumps, lumps, cuts, thorns, etc.
Your dog will need regular grooming.
It is important that he accepts this from you, as part of is pack behavior.
Not only will you need to handle your own dog, others will also have to handle him. This includes your veterinary surgeon, kennel staff, show judges, friends and so on. Start teaching him to accept this as soon as possible.
Begin with gentle stroking at a time when your dog is quiet and calm, but not wanting to sleep. Ensure that you can stroke him all over, including his legs, tummy, mouth and around his tail. This should not be a game or wrestling match. Reward your dog with treats if this helps.
When you can stroke him all over, take a soft brush and stroke him with this. At first, stroke with the brush and give him a treat. Then give two strokes with the brush for one treat then three and so on. Keep sessions short and always end on a good note.
Repeat using a towel. Do not wait until your dog is wet or muddy, practice when he is dry. Stroke one paw with the towel and stop and reward him for good behaviour. This way he learns to be more tolerant. Progress to being able to brush your dog all over, pick up his feet, open his mouth, dry him with a towel, adjust his collar and anything else. Ideally, other members in the family should also repeat this process. It may help to have a certain area for brushing, but your dog should learn to tolerate handling everywhere.
