Getting a puppy is an exciting time for you and for your family. It’s quite easy to take home the first cute puppy you see but this may be a mistake in the long run. Even though puppies are cute and fuzzy they are all unique and pose certain qualities that a potential owner should seek out.
Does The Puppy Take Interest In You?
When you see a litter of puppies, wait and see which puppies take an interest in you and your family. Some puppies will notice you but many others will not and take notice in other puppies, food or toys. When a puppy takes interest in you, you know that as it ages it will continue to look to you for direction and praise.
Does The Puppy Look Healthy?
Make sure to take a good look at the puppies you are interested in. Look to see if there is discharge around the nose and eyes and note the energy of the puppies. Signs like discharge and lethargy indicate illness so keep your eyes out. Also make sure the puppy isn’t deaf by clapping when the dog is looking away. Another key thing to look for is vaccination records. Do not purchase or get a puppy without proper vaccination records. If you do get a puppy without vaccination records you can infect other pets in your home and your puppy could get Parvo, a highly infectious disease that can kill your puppy.
Do The Parent Dogs Interact With You And Your Family?
It might be a good idea to see how the the mother and father dogs of the litter interact with you and your family. This is a good indication of how the puppies will grow up to be. Note the energy level and how easily they follow directions. Do the mother and father dog have good temperaments? A good breeder will allow you to see the mother and father dog so take that opportunity to meet them and look at their overall personalities.
It takes time to choose the right puppy from a litter. Look at a variety of litters and puppies to make sure you find the right puppy for your lifestyle and family. With a little patience, you will soon have a puppy that you will love and take care of and cherish for many years to come.
