House Training Puppies - Yorkshire Terriers Need A Little Extra Patience

House training puppies takes time and focus, and certain breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers may need a little extra TLC and patience. There are lots of things that make Yorkies special, and so a little bit of extra time and attention with potty training will go a long ways to creating a wonderful bond between you and your new pet. Actually this is true of many of the smaller breeds or toy breeds as they are known. Those little bladders can only hold so much!

With small breeds such as Yorkies, you might be considering an indoor potty option. There are a number of routes you can go, including puppy training pads, litter box and a little porch with fake grass to simulate outdoors. However, most people find it easier to train a puppy to go outdoors, so if you have chosen the indoor method, be prepared for it to take a little while longer for your pup to get the hang of it. This can work well if you are away at work for hours of the day and cannot give your pup an afternoon potty break outdoors.

Sometimes Yorkies can get stubborn about going outdoors in poor weather (sometimes their owners can get stubborn about going outdoors in poor weather too!). Having a sweater to keep your little guy warm during bad weather will make the routine go much smoother. Another option is to have a backup location that is only used during bad weather.

When house training puppies, one of the most important things to remember is that you need to be consistent in your approach and the reward needs to be immediate. Setting a schedule of going potty first thing in the morning, at a certain time after eating, say 20 or 30 minutes, and then before a walk or playtime. Many times a dog will need to go after a walk or playtime. But it’s a good idea to set up a schedule of having them use the toilet first, then part of their rewards is playtime or a walk. You want to use the same location each time so your Yorkie knows what is supposed to happen at that area, and will associate that spot as the toilet. Don’t forget to clean up after you pup!

Rewarding your pup for positive behavior will do wonders for getting him potty trained in a short span of time. You should take him to the spot, wait for him to do his business, and once he has completed the act, you want to be ready with immediate praise, affection and a treat. Not five minutes later, but immediately. This is one of the most common mistakes dog owners make, is that they do not respond to positive behaviors immediately, and lose the opportunity to really reinforce that behavior in your dog.

Many people find that they are able to get their pup house trained in about a weekend, but often with the small breeds such as Yorkies, it can take a few weeks. Just know that nothing is wrong, and the more consistent you are and focused on training your puppy, the quicker you will begin to see results.Learning how to train a puppy is one of the most important things you can do to build a close bond with your Yorkshire Terrier.
