Being descendants of pack animals, dogs have needed to find a way to determine leadership within their packs. You have probably seen many examples of pack behavior watching TV.The pack’s have ways of teaching the new members just where they belong in the order, and this keeps things on an even keel, and reduces problems among the pack members.
Each pack must have an alpha dog. You and your family become your dog’s new pack, and your home their new den, when you adopt your new pet. Just like with a child, you must assume the responsibility of being the leader and establishing the guidelines you want your new pet to follow. Your pet needs to know that he is below your family in the pecking order, to avoid any confusion that could lead to displays of aggression.
Although it is much simpler to teach a puppy to be submissive, an older dog can also be taught that you are the alpha dog, not him. You’ll find that just by being consistent with some basic obedience training exercises you can establish yourself as the alpha dog.
You don’t have to be aggressive in order to demonstrate that you are the alpha leader to your dog. Being the alpha leader is more a matter of attitude and confidence that you show your dog. You don’t want to use hitting or yelling at your dog to demonstrate that you are in charge. Those types of negative actions will confuse your dog and hurt your attempts to establish the trust and confidence you need to get your dog to listen to you. Earn his respect and trust with positive training, always being fair and consistent, and this will put you in the alpha position.
The best way for you to become the Alpha dog is by concentrating on really doing a good job obedience training your dog. By repeating a few of the basic obedience exercises, such as sit, stay, etc., many times a day, your dog will learn he must listen to you-the alpha leader, if he wants something-even if its just your attention and praise. Due to your consistent and persistent training your dog will look to you for guidance and give you the deserved alpha status. Use the tips below to become the alpha dog without having to use any harsh techniques at all.
- Tell your dog to sit down and make him wait a little bit in that position, perhaps 30 seconds, before giving him his dinner bowl. By doing this you are showing your dog that you have control of the food-this is a pretty clear way to tell him who the Alpha dog really is. Only feed him after he has obeyed you and remained in position-no the food is a reward for good behavior. If you do this each time you feed your dog, you are really reinforcing who is the alpha dog, and also helping him develop good manners at dinnertime.
- Another good idea is to make your dog sit and wait at the door every time he wants to go outside until he is invited out by you. By repeating the training exercises regularly your dog will soon learn to look for guidance from you for whatever activity you are doing together.
- When you take your dog for a walk and need to cross a street, you can also use a very similar exercise. Bring your dog to the curb of the street, but make him take a seat and wait for your command to move. This training serves the dual purpose of teaching your dog not to run into the street, but also reinforces your alpha status.
If you make sure to obedience train your dog using positive reinforcement training on a consistent daily basis, it shouldn’t be hard to earn your dog’s trust and respect as the alpha leader of your pack.
