How To Teach Your Dog Tricks - The Basics!

Dog Obedience Add comments

Dogs are unmistakably the most popular pet over the globe, and its easy to see why. Dogs have, for thousands of years, been beside man and used for various roles naming but a few: herding sheep and cattle, providing alternative ’sight’ to the blind, sniffing for incriminating evidence for police, and abundantly, a companion/family member to dog-loving families.

Dogs vary in all shapes, sizes, intellect, coats, and abilities, but despite these wide spectrum of differences, they all are able to learn tricks. This process of learning is not only fun for the dog and their owners, but also develops a close interaction between the two - it allows the dog to be responsive and rewarded by their human families.

Every dog has his own personality. Some dogs are better at certain tricks than others. But, every dog can learn tricks and many of these tricks are your basic obedience skills that all dogs should know. Even dogs that are not well trained will have tricks they do to get attention. It is when you teach them to do it when you want them to do it, is this considered a trick.

No matter how smart or dumb your dog is, they all can follow basic commands and tricks too. The solution is simple - first use ‘reward training’ , followed by praise, but remember to call it a day when your dog stops having fun!

An easy first trick that all dogs can learn to do is to wag their tails on command. Your dog probably wags his tail all the time when he is happy anyways. So simply use this to teach them the trick. The opening command could be something like, “Are you a happy dog?” Praise your dog while they are wagging their tail.

Other training tips:

- no ‘yelling’ - it may scare your dog!
- reward them with sheer excitement when they perform a trick - this is a positive reinforcement for the dog! They’ll feel significant!
- talk to your dog - the more your talk, the more responsive they will be to vocal commands
- make them earn their treats!
- start off with easier tricks
- have fun with them - they will be more likely to engage!

…Remember dogs like to please!
