Need an expert on indoor puppy training?
Posted on Aug 02, 2010 under puppy training | 8 CommentsI had tought my two puppies to pee on the training pads.
My aunt thought it was laziest to let my puppies go to the pads.
I’m doing the right thing?
It really depends on you, your situation, and your dogs, as well as the adult size they will reach. I wouldn’t train a large breed pup to use a piddle pad, simply because it isn’t practical in the long run.
I’ve trained my 2 chihuahuas to use a piddle pad. They go outside as well, provided it’s not too cold. But somedays, it’s really just too could for them and they refuse. I can’t blame them, I wouldn’t want to go out there and freeze either.
Some people are for it, some are against it. It’s really about what’s best for you and your situation.
As for me and mine, it’s the right decision for us. And I’m glad I made it, on days where I have places to go and things to do, and might not be back in time. They don’t have to hold it or worse have an accident, they have their piddle pad they can get to, and it’s easy for me to clean it.

whatever you want to do. If you want to have to spend money to have them go on the pads the rest of their life that is fine. Also, are you just training them on the pads for when they need to have accidents or you are away OR are you also training them to go outside? The only thing is if you would one day decide to train them to go outside after using the pads it might be a little harder. However,my grandparents trained their dog to go on newspaper in a kiddy swimming pool in their basement and his whole life he did that. I don’t think it is a matter of right or wrong but just how you want your dog’s potty situation to be in a few years. If youare fine with the pads for the rest of their life – the dogs won’t mind either. Just make sure you do take them for walks and stuff and aren’t using the pads to avoid having to exercise them.

It really depends. I never recommend the training pads, as it is really hard to break the habit. I doubt you want them going to the bathroom in your home for the rest of their lives.
It’s hard when they are puppies since they have to go so often, but it will get better. I think the sooner you get rid of the pads the better.

are you litter training the puppies? Or do you want them to go outside some day?
If you want them to go outside, take the pads outdoors with your puppy. The puppies will use them there. Treat them with something good, and they’ll catch on. Pretty soon they will learn to potty outside without the pads.
Dogs are adaptable.

Indoor puppy traininig isn’t the right thing to do, Outdoor training is the best, Indoor they will get used to pee on the pad and when you take it away from them they will pee on other stuff, Indoor training is for lazy people that can’t get up and take their dog outside every couple of hours…

I’m always amazed (and disappointed) at the huge number of people who ask puppy training questions AFTER they obtain the animal. It is every pet owners obligation to do research ahead of time and have a clear understanding of what is involved in caring for that pet. Dr. Stanley Coren is my favorite dog trainer and his books and videos are excellent but there are many other well qualified experts accessible over the internet. Do your pet a favor and get busy reading!

For me I think it depends on your situation and the age of the dog.
I feel if you can avoid them…avoid them. If it is not too cold out or the dog is not too too young I would bring them outside and get the potty training underway.
If you can ever avoid any poop or pee in the house I would . You will just need to retrain the dogs again to go outside later so why don’t you do it now and get it over with.
