Who would know about training lab puppies and housebreaking them?
Posted on Jul 15, 2010 under training puppies | 6 CommentsI have a 13 week lab puppy – the housetraining went very well and was housetrained in about 2 weeks after getting her. however, the last few nights she has peed in the house. Does anyone know if this is normal for the puppy to regress?
Since she’s so little, she’s not house trained yet. She can’t hold her bladder for more then four hours right now, and it’s not surprising she’s had some accidents. You’ll need to take her out in the middle of the night. And don’t assumed she’s house trained after just two weeks!

She wasn’t housetrained….she was in the process of learning.
Then you stopped.
Training is an ongoing process.

Yes it is normal. But definitely keep an eye on it. If it happens more frequently she can have an infection.
Just make sure you clean up the spot really well and neutralize the area, otherwise she will continue to go in that spot.

Yes, very much so. Sometimes you can miss cues in which the puppy is trying to tell you he or she needs to pee. He or she may not quite understand to scratch on the door and or whimper to get your attention. It is an on going process.

Actually, it’s completely insane to expect a dog that age to be potty trained – I suspect you just had some good luck there by coincidence. A 13 week pup is an infant, and infants do not come potty trained.
Give it time, keep a routine, get her out after meals, and every 2 hours if you can, but expect to take months to train her. Puppies don’t have much control over their functions at this age, so don’t be expecting the impossible and lose patience or get mad at the pup.
Get a book on puppies please – your expectations are completely unrealistic. Positive reinforcement is the way to go, and crate training is the surest, but have patience and learn what to expect from a dog this age.
