Like a child, your dog needs discipline so they behave in a sociable and controlled manner. This is very important for around the home and when they are around other houses or out and about on walks, trips etc…This is not telling off your dog but really a process of education to the correct way to conduct themselves – so you can be proud and pleased to have him as your pet.
Saying ‘no’ is not so much an exercise as a basic life skill that all dogs must learn. Every dog needs to know that a certain word means ‘stop, that is not right’. Do not confuse this with telling off your dog. We can assume that any mistakes he makes are because he did not know what he should be doing. Therefore, how would it help to tell him off? It is purely because our teaching has not been complete, which is not his fault. Instead, the word ‘no’ should be an educational word, meaning simply ‘that is not what I want’.
It should be said, like all commands to our dog, in a voice loud enough for him to hear. The aim is not to shout so loud that he becomes frightened. Starting from the first day with your new puppy or dog, teach that ‘no’ means ‘stop, you cannot do this’. If he is doing something he should not, say ‘no’ and move him away. Give him something else that he can do.
Do not shout, do not be cross. You are simply explaining the rules to him.
Whenever you say ‘no’, be prepared to enforce this, by gently moving him if necessary. You cannot say ‘no’ and then ignore him. If he does not stop, you must go to him and gently move him. If he does stop what he is doing, give an appropriate reward.
