How To Train Puppy To Stop Biting!

My answer to a very popular viewer question:

Curbing play-biting/mouthing/nipping is the top priority for new puppy parents. Consistency & a positive, gentle approach allows us to quickly & effectively teach a puppy to make the right choices. The emphasis is on teaching the puppy the appropriate behaviors, instead of correcting them for making reasonable mistakes. Remember that puppies love to interact with their human(s) in all sorts of ways, and learn from every interaction that we have with them.

As an alternative to using aversive punishment, this multi-faceted approach allows us to creatively connect with our dogs by employing positive reinforcement and harnessing a relationship that is based on trust & respect.

I tried to make this video shorter, but I had too much to say and this is the best I could do! If you like this video, please share it with anyone that you think might find it useful. If you have any other puppy questions/concerns, feel free to leave them in the comments & I will address them in the next puppy training video!

@claudiahoyle Very true! Best to have a toy in each hand if we’re going to engage in that kind of play.

great advice given here, another one I always give to clients is playing with hands is not allowed, some people love to play with their hands and tease the dog, not realizing that the dog then will bite the hands to engage into play when they have that need. Awesome, straight to my favourites :D

i also started brushing kali’s teeth to help her learn not to chew hard. this really helped relieve her teething and she seemed to enjoy it tremendously while the new ones were erupting. she learned to go easy on the toothbrush(and the hands holding it) because if she chewed too hard the wonderful toothbrush went away. i started with a plain brush, as she would chew on it harder with the toothpaste on it, but how i can use her chicken flavored paste without her trying to eat the brush:)

in addition to some of the things you suggested, what i did with kali was let her chew on me but only when she was calm and nibbling softly.this shows her that its ok to chew on my skin,as long as she does it with very light pressure.if she chewed too hard i would yip and walk away.this helps give her a soft bite in the event she does turn around to grab at a hand.

Nice video! My new puppy has a very soft bite but since he has sharp teeth, it can still hurt. I tend to simply remove my hands, and/or stop playing with him for a moment. The other alternative is to put something in my hands that he is permitted to bite.

In my opinion, this is the best video I’ve seen on youtube about how to train your puppy not to bite. Very informative!

I had to use time-out when I taught my puppy not to bite because she was a “monster”.. I only did it in the beginning of the training because as she got a little bit older she eventually understood the meaning of “OUCH”!
