If your dog is driving you crazy with his barking, it is time to try and figure out why he barks so much. There are many reasons why a dog barks and you can’t stop it if you don’t know what’s causing it.
He might be frightened or stressed. Dogs are very dependent on us. If we leave for any length of time, even something as short as a trip to the cleaners, your dog might have separation anxiety. The more short trips you take, the faster he will begin to realize you will be back. For instance, my dog knows that when I get home he will get a treat. That is his reward for being a good boy.
Some dogs bark when they feel threatened. You need to become the pack leader so your dog will trust that you are in charge and know it is OK to stop barking because he has alerted you to a potential threat. Remember that your dog is good security so you don’t want him to be afraid to bark if there is a problem.
Your dog may be barking to get your attention. Do not reinforce this behavior by giving him that attention. When he sees it isn’t working, he will find another way to get your attention, such as, nudging you or sitting in front of you with that look “CAN YOU SEE ME NOW?”.
Sometimes a dog will bark when he is bored. Dogs are no different than people. When there is no one around and there is nothing to do, why not bark. Try to leave your dog with some toys to play with. You may want to get new toys from time to time so he doesn’t get bored with them. A quiet house can also cause boredom. Try leaving a radio on for company. The sound of human voices can help to calm any anxiety your dog is feeling.
Always remember to reward your dog for good behavior. Scratching, petting and treats work wonders.
