Do It Yourself Dog Training Made Easy

Safety, When Walking Your Dog

Dog Obedience Add comments

Before walking your dog along an unfamiliar route, walk it once yourself. This is best done at the same time of day you plan to walk your dog. Consider how much foot and vehicle traffic is on the route. Look for wild or domestic animals that are roaming loose. Be especially aware of other dogs, even if they are contained in a fenced yard. Ask yourself these questions:

- Does this route have safe sidewalks or a wide shoulder?
- Is this route well lit at night?
- Is there a lot of fast-moving traffic on this route?
- If your dog is distracted by people, is there too much foot traffic here to ensure a good walk?
- Are there lots of birds, squirrels, or cats running loose? This is relevant if your dog has a strong prey drive.
- Are there any dogs in this neighborhood that are allowed to run loose?
- If there are dogs along the route that are contained, how likely is it that they could escape?

Tools to Prevent or Stop an Attack
Even taking all the precautions outlined above, an attack on you or your dog by another person or animal is always possible. For most attack threats, you don´t need to carry a large or dangerous object. Here are five tools you can use to prevent or stop an attack:

- Your voice: If you see an animal rushing towards your pet, and you believe it not to be a physical threat to yourself, move in front of your dog to protect it and yell at the approaching dog in a loud, angry voice.
- An air horn: This works much like your own voice, but can be more effective because it is a louder, unfamiliar noise. The downside is that it has the potential to hurt or scare your own dog.
- An umbrella: This trick has actually been used successfully by game wardens to frighten away wolves! Quickly opening an umbrella in the direction of an approaching dog will often scare it enough to break off it´s attack and run away. If you aren´t quick enough to get the umbrella open, it can still be used to threaten an attacking animal without putting one of your own limbs in danger.
